How We Made ‘COCOA’ 10x Scarier and have Better Environments!

Hey eyeballs!

Last week, we asked our newsletter subscribers and closed communities regarding COCOA’s environment suggestions. We think that the child laborer’s section can have more props and look on the environment to further diversify the big map that it has. Since we’ll be chased around in a maze-like jungle, we need distinctive areas.

These are your suggestions for the game’s environments!

  • Rain effect
  • Fog effects
  • Lantern
  • Chickens and their cage
  • Fireflies
  • Birds
  • Rusty motorcycles
  • Multi-colored Jerricans
  • Metal spareparts
  • Mutli-colored sacks
  • Dirt newspaper/magazines/papers on the ground
  • Tree stumps
  • Dry leaves

And here they are in action!

We want to say thank you to everyone who gave us the suggestions because it truly gave the game more depth and details in each path of the map.

We also improved the guard chase.

A lot of you want the chase to be scarier and gripping. We also wanted more of this, and we did so by adding some effect filters like vignette, flashing screens, gave the player and guards an onion skin effect, and intense sound effects like a rusty/gloomy ambience filter, breaths of distress, and some violin/string overlays.

Overall, we’re happy with the results and glad that the game’s feel of trauma and gloominess can emerge even more. It’s kind of ironic that we thought the colorful look in the beginning would fit the game :’).

Don’t forget to wishlist COCOA on Steam so you don’t miss out on a demo and full release! We planned to release the demo on Steam’s February 2025 NextFest and the full release on March or April of 2025, so stay tunned.
